What You'll Do <ul> <li>Technical Leadership: Drive the architecture, development, and deployment of new features and backend services to support our games and platform</li> <li>Collaboration: Partner closely with game engineers, especially those working with Unity, to ensure seamless client-server integration</li> <li>Best Practices: Define and promote engineering best practices in code quality, testing, monitoring, and deployment.</li> <li>Mentorship: Guide and mentor engineers, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration, and technical excellence</li> <li>Reliability & Performance: Own the reliability, scalability, and performance of our backend systems; proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks</li> <li>Process & Documentation: Establish robust processes for deployment, monitoring, and technical documentation in alignment with studio-wide production standards</li> <li>Production Support: Act as a technical authority in diagnosing complex issues in production and driving resolution plans</li> <li>Culture Champion: Embody and promote our company values, helping to shape a high-performing and inclusive engineering culture</li> </ul> What We're Looking For Experience & Technical Skills <ul> <li>8+ years of professional software development experience in the gaming industry</li> <li>Deep expertise in Java and object-oriented programming</li> <li>Proven experience designing scalable, distributed backend systems and RESTful APIs</li> <li>Solid understanding of service-oriented architectures (SOA) and microservices</li> <li>Expertise in high-concurrency database design (relational and/or NoSQL)</li> <li>Experience working with performance-critical systems, including profiling and tuning applications</li> <li>Practical knowledge of Apache Thrift or similar RPC frameworks is a plus</li> <li>Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker) and orchestration tools</li> <li>Proficient with AWS services such as EC2, CloudFormation, and RDS; experience with Google Cloud is a bonus</li> <li>Strong grasp of algorithms, data structures, and system design</li> <li>Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps best practices, and infrastructure automation</li> </ul> Cross-Functional and Game-Specific Knowledge <ul> <li>Exposure to or direct experience integrating Unity or other game engine clients with backend services</li> <li>Understanding of game loop mechanics, player session management, and real-time data exchange between client and backend systems</li> <li>Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments</li> <li>Familiarity with analytics, telemetry, and live operations workflows</li> <li>Experience working on live service games</li> </ul> Soft Skills & Education <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience</li> <li>Strong communication and interpersonal skills-you can clearly articulate technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders</li> <li>A passion for mentorship, collaboration, and continuous learning</li> </ul> At Scopely, we create games for everyone - and want to ensure that the people behind our games reflect that!
