JCPenney was founded on a simple principle known as the Golden Rule. James Cash Penney believed that all associates, customers, and suppliers should be treated with fairness, honesty, and integrity. Today, we embrace those same ideals by creating and sustaining an environment that encourages associates to bring their best selves to their work and teams. As the Passionate Everyday Champion, we courageously strive to inspire our customers, cultivate confident leaders, innovate through strategic partners, and serve our communities. Through education, accountability and investment, Inclusion and Diversity is the journey of growth that we take together every day to deliver on our founding principle, the Golden Rule.
WINGS Bangalore is committed to empowering all women by connecting, developing, and retaining female talent, championing gender equality, and making a social impact in local communities and youth programs. This network creates an inclusive environment and shares in the understanding that women deserve the opportunity to realize their fullest potential while making significant contributions to the business across multiple countries.
With the recent launch of WINGS Circles in partnership with Lean In, our community will now grow stronger and support each other more than ever.
Company History
JCPenney was founded in Kemmerer, Wyoming, in 1902 by James Cash Penney. The first store, named The Golden Rule, set the standard by which we have operated for over a century – to treat others as we would like to be treated. Today, we operate more than 650 locations across the United States and Puerto Rico – and while fashion and shopping patterns have evolved, our focus on putting customers at the heart of what we do remains unchanged.

Connecting Company, Community, and Cause
At JCPenney, we’ve been committed to building strong, vibrant communities since James Cash Penney founded the Company on the Golden Rule in 1902. Today, we are passionate about helping underserved students build the confidence they need to stay engaged in school, attend college, and prepare for a rewarding career. We connect Company, community, and cause by investing our time and resources in three primary impact areas: professional clothing needs, youth programming, and career readiness support. Through the volunteer spirit of our associates and strategic investment in the work of our non-profit partners, JCPenney is doing our part to improve the communities where we live and work.
